Fill the matrix: 2018-03-12 & DNF

Image
Let me start my new randomly posted information with some stories around the updates. First of all it is jsut sharing some of the matrix data available online for you to see statistics about your geocaching adventure. I won't post all the details, what I will do is put some of the matrixes up on a post with some explanation and guides how to fill them (which is obvious) and how to find what to find. Singapore, at one of the beaches Now take a look at the above photo. I was there and the only reason I ended up there was a geocache. Did I find it? Nope. Was I sad? Nope. Why? Just look at the view. That is what made this search a good memory at the end. Ok, before I get to the full story let me show you the matrix this whole location was about. D/T matrix Yes the famous Difficulty / Terrain matrix or the 81 matrix or some just call it the nightmare. What is this matrix all about? If you are playing geocaching for a while you already know that each geocache h...

Geocache: Noah's Ark and a minirail

Image
The last few weeks I tried to go for geocaches on days that help me fill in my calendar. In many cases I just picked one that is in reach within a short time. The weather is not always too supportive here in the Netherlands. This time we headed to an easy pick along the Maas river, and we had not much clue on what to expect, one thing was sure there should be some seats to take as the geocache was under the small table next to the seats. If there are seats there should be a nice view we thought. Not too complicated or creative but I guess not the container what was fun here As you can see what we found was a nano under the table, easy to find. Hiding under the small table So when we arrived we drove over some interesting things, did not really think anything of that at that time. Then we got out of the car and started walking towards the coordinates, when I spotted a giraffe. What is that doing here on top of that big... Wait a second... What is that big building looking ob...

Geocache: Branch #3

Image
There is an unlimeted number of ways to hide a geocache and also to hide it in a branch of a tree. Some of them are more challenging than the others, check this out below. Just like there is a cut tree there. The bigger the branch used the bigger the container could be, not really in this case, it was not a pill capsule or a petling, but still a micro sized container. With the cap on top When it has the cap on the top of the branch it is really not one that stands out of the croud in its environment. As the hide is in between some bigger and smaller trees and the GPS was jumping around we had no choice but look everywhere. We arrived while the sun was still up high so it was not to hard to cover a bigger area. You could see many geocachers do the same as all the area was clean of fallen brances and you could see their footprints all over the place. Just a few steps away and the hide is hard to spot. This is a lower difficulty level hide, but still I would not recommen...

Geocache: Smiling tennis ball

Image
Sunny afternoon, usual busy day at work, let's get outside. It is not so hot as the previous days, so it's time to find a few geocaches which are just there, but not many in the area. A happy tennis ball. When it comes to more creative geocaches they allways give more pleasure, but they are mostly placed one by one and not on trails or series. The was next to a closeby lake, but on the other side we had to drive 15 minutes to get to the parking, and all we could find in that area was two, but both of them was a good hide. Let me eat that pill capsule. It can still be a micro container and have fun finding it. This hiding technic gets on the list of I want to create one of these myself. I'm not sure if it is fortunate or unfortunate but where we live there are so many geocaches in the area that it is close to impossible to hide more, so any ideas I duplicate will be far from where I find them. A picture from below while it is hiding. Under a small wooden br...

Geocache: Behind the fence

Image
Another sunny day in the Netherlands, you cannot skip these days they are not so common as in some other places. We got our foldable bicycles into the trunk of the car and on the way to a serie in some nice relaxed area with lots of nature. A petling behind the fence. This serie was placed with bigger distances between the geocaches, which is not the best if you are after statistics, but which is also no problem if you just want to enjoy an afternoon out in fresh air. This is what we were up to, get out of the house find some geocaches take some cool pictures. Parking It is cool when they create parking for the bicycles which reminds me the wild west with horse parking. As you can see our easy to fold geocaching bicycle parked, this is what we ended up using the most often. We do (did) have bigger bicycles, I sold mine, and we also have the bicycle holder for the hook on the car, but moounting that placing the bicycles on it and then getting them on putting back, getting...

Geocache: Branch #2

Image
There are so many different implementations of tree branches to camouflage the geocache, this is another one of them. A hole with a petling glued in. Simple but efficient hiding technic here, there is a pole next to a tree which is on the bench of some water so it looks like part of the structure to keep the bench from falling in. A smaller branch is screwed to the pole and that small branch has a hole where a petling fits perfectly and also glued in there only the cap is visible. Now you turn it downwards so anyone not looking won't spot it. Great work, nice hide. With the cap on the petling. It is really a cool way of hiding, I'll try to reproduce, just need to figure out how to drill such a long hole for the petling, might not have the tool to do so. This is what you see when you first look at the location. In the Netherlands, in places where not many kids are coming by and mostly just cycling area or walking it is not so hard to hid geocaches as people ar...

Geocache: In the fence pole

Image
Any place is a good one to hide a geocache. This one was part of a serie in the Netherlands, and during the search we were suspecting one to be in the hole on the top of a pole which was part of the fence... and there you go there was a hide just as we hoped for. The geocache with some real plants in the hole. I keep on thinking how these holes form? Are they man made? If yes, for what to help the pole to rot from the inside, but what is that good for? If no, then who took the parts out? Maybe one day I will learn the answer till that I keep on geocachnig and try to find more of these easy ones and some harder ones as well. A closeer picture of the container with the land the fence was guarding. I like to interact with animals, so when I'm geocaching in such environment I'm always hoping to have animals on the other side of the geocache, maybe some cows, or some sheeps or at least a horse, there is always at least one which is curious and would come closer and l...

Geocache: Duck in the water

Image
As an animal lover it is always fun to find a geocache that has anything to do with animals. This one was floating in the water just like many other ducks in the area. A duck just hanging out there. I saw the same ducks available in a discount store in Germany, and I also decided next time I stop by and they still have one I'll get one or two for myself as well. I hide in an area where there is a river so this would do a great hide there. I was thinking a lot where to put the container in a duck, and this is a great idea, just a hole on the top and the container plugged in there with some sealing. I have a slightly different idea on how I will do, but later on that. See the hole on the back of the duck, that is where the container was hiding. As this duck was part of a trail we really enjoyed the whole trail, no two same hiding way seen on the eight geocaches on the trail. I have to say I always respect the cache owners who put such effort into hiding a trail with all ...

Geocache: Behind the light

Image
The happy last day of my trip in Taiwan. Finally I get home to see my family, the only flight that was available takes off later in the evening so I had to spend some time, the trivial solution was to go geocaching. I decided to get to an area where within walking distance I have a chance to find more. This was one of them. Hiding behind the light. Some magnets are holding this container in place, the fun was that I should say lots of magnets, usually a single one is efficient, but looks like this CO had either many magnets extra or want to make it compatible with small kids hanging on it. Here is the container closer. The light hiding the container in the back, easy to reach, easy to spot. It is so easy to spot, in some countries this would go missing regularly for sure, but seems to be in place for a while now here. At the time I write this blog post my neck is already in pain. I got sunburnt, it was so strong, I could feel it burning, but had nothing to prot...
