Geocache: Budapest Border Trail #1

Image
Some cities have a border trail, they are a kind of trails where they place the geocaches around a city's border. Now that itself is interesting, when you have a bigger city, but how about around a capital of a country. Now that is something, but believe or not it is well maintained after 6 years out in the wild. The trail has hundreds of geocaches along all different areas. Relax, I won't share each and every piece of them I find as that could be boring after a few finds, but I will show some of the hides in my blogposts. Geocache in the tree... As many of the European trails this one also have a lots of pet preforms. I also use them to hide, but I prefer to enhance them a bit not just put them out there. Some of the geocaches are mistery hides with easier like add this and that to the coord and you have the final and some with more difficult ways to get the final coords. They are placed on the map to follow the border of Budapest, but on areas where placing out the ge...

Geocache: Under a plank

Image
Oh, this was fun ... when you start playing geocaching you try to go for the lower difficulty and terrain, then based on your experience you increase what you give a try. This one was around 3. When we got to the coordinates we first looked around, then saw that on the other end of the plank in front of us there is a tree. We assumed the container will be somewhere there for the higher difficulty level. The petling hiding under the plank. Of course I walked over the plank. Can you imagine how dizzy you can get if you walk on a narrow plank while the water below you is visibly floating? Most people would not even step on the plank to get to the other side, but I did, was fun once. The other end of the plank. After walking to the other side with my phone in my pocket my camera in my hand there was this small fence kind of construction. Why is that here? How do I get around? It is moving ... oh, nothing to hold on to to at least feel secure on this plank. So I lifted it a bit...

Geocache: Behind the fence

Image
Another sunny day in the Netherlands, you cannot skip these days they are not so common as in some other places. We got our foldable bicycles into the trunk of the car and on the way to a serie in some nice relaxed area with lots of nature. A petling behind the fence. This serie was placed with bigger distances between the geocaches, which is not the best if you are after statistics, but which is also no problem if you just want to enjoy an afternoon out in fresh air. This is what we were up to, get out of the house find some geocaches take some cool pictures. Parking It is cool when they create parking for the bicycles which reminds me the wild west with horse parking. As you can see our easy to fold geocaching bicycle parked, this is what we ended up using the most often. We do (did) have bigger bicycles, I sold mine, and we also have the bicycle holder for the hook on the car, but moounting that placing the bicycles on it and then getting them on putting back, getting...

Geocache: Nano on the gate

Image
Sometimes you come across some nanos that just fun to find. This one was one of them. On a gate that actually did not close anything or did not seem to have any purpose. Can you spot the nano? It is silver. ... hiding in that small hole. Clever hide, no muggle would spot it for sure. Taken out. As this was part of a series in a new recreational area with a bonus cache at the end it had a bonus code on the container. The only way a muggle would spot this geocache would be if he tried to open the gate, but as it is just standing there in the middle of nothing why would anyone do try to open? The scenery from the cache As you can see on the above picture the area is so new that the grass did not even start growing. It would be nice to come back in a few months to see how much nicer it is, but I guess if we'll have another afternoon for geocaching we'll just go to some other place. See? in the middle of nothing, left behind? Sometimes when you see somethin...

Geocache: Duck in the water

Image
As an animal lover it is always fun to find a geocache that has anything to do with animals. This one was floating in the water just like many other ducks in the area. A duck just hanging out there. I saw the same ducks available in a discount store in Germany, and I also decided next time I stop by and they still have one I'll get one or two for myself as well. I hide in an area where there is a river so this would do a great hide there. I was thinking a lot where to put the container in a duck, and this is a great idea, just a hole on the top and the container plugged in there with some sealing. I have a slightly different idea on how I will do, but later on that. See the hole on the back of the duck, that is where the container was hiding. As this duck was part of a trail we really enjoyed the whole trail, no two same hiding way seen on the eight geocaches on the trail. I have to say I always respect the cache owners who put such effort into hiding a trail with all ...

Geocache: Fake broken branch

Image
This is not the first and I hope not the last of this kind of geocaches I found out there. All you need is a good old tree with a hole where your container fits easy and won't hang out, a small piece of branch, preferrably same tree to match the colors and texture. Connect the two and plug it in, there you go. Pulled out a bit for better view. As you can see this hide was not that difficult as the cache owner did not use the same type of wood to camouflage the hide. We were going all around the tree for a few minutes before I spotted this one, and we were in three. For the size I added my small pen to the picture, so you see it is no bigger than a nano vial. I also like using the plastic vials but mostly in urban areas, as this tree was standing by itself on the field it does not take much to suspect the cache is on the tree, but just imagine it was in a forest with bad GPS signal... ok don't even imagine, that would be a sneaky, evil hide. This is how we found...

Geocache: Mushroom

Image
While out in a forest I like to take pictures of mushrooms. This time it was the geocahce, really visible, out in plain sight, but not from the path the muggles are walking on. Are they real? or not? Nice realistic ceramic mushroom nicely standing and hiding the geocache container under it. Some nettle already started to grow around it, I can only guess but from the end of the spring till the end of autumn there must be a lot more growing in the area and must be harder to get to it. Some good news to anyone visiting this cache is that on that day we walked this whole trail we meat 2 more geocachers doing the same trail, and we all saw a few logged same day before us, so there will be a nice pathway cut to the cache. This cahce was a part of a trail with seven caches and a bonus which you got the coordinates from the previous seven. This was the first we found. From a distance it is nicely visible as well. I'd like to mention that this first hide from the serie was in...

Power Trail: ABOV Mega Trail - the beginning

Image
As I was already looking at this mega trail for a while it was time to start with it. I had a free weekend in the area and a fellow geocacher was also free we decided to go for it. The section we covered on this trip Let's start with the preparations. First thing was what to take with us for the trip?  We decided that we'll focus on the number of caches collected in the shortest time while we also wanted to enjoy the scenery and the hike, so we went with two cars, parked one at one end while the other at the other end, then walked back to the first car, drive up to the second and parked to the next part. We did the above in two parts a longer and then as it was still daylight we did the next as well. So what else you might need for such an adventure? Most important is a GPS device, to be honest we had multiple phones, and a laptop with GPS as well. We had backup battery, chargers, also the laptop can be used as a charger. You will also need enough water or somethi...
