Geocache: To hide in the woods

Image
I had some extra minutes during my weekend and I decided to use the new duck tape I just brought back from Memphis. Camouflaged for the woods I saw this duck tape used on many geocaches in the USA, so I was sure it is something easy to buy, but I could not find it any stores. On my last trip to Memphis I decided I will look into many different and cheap stores as well. After three days searching I finally found one and only one roll in a dollar store. Now I have the brand, it is  duckbrand.com . I visited their site and could not find this pattern anywhere, so I'll have to keep on finding this in dollar stores I guess. If you know any better source do not hesitate let me know. So here is what I used for the above two geocaches: Materials used The tape itself is not the best glued one, but with some help it sticks perfectly. What I did was to put that wire around the neck of the containers then cover both fully with the duck tape starting at the top and bottom and then...

Geocache: Sempervivum

Image
When it comes to PET preforms, I always prefer to add some to them to make the hide a bit more fun to find. Here is my implementation of the sempervivum. The sempervivum on top of the cap. All you need to make this geocache is: a PET preform (petling) a plastic sempervivum (you can find it in local dollar stores, action stores, look at the decoration departments, if you are luck they might have ones broken for like 10 cents, but they are the best for this) a green cap for the petling, I prefer a dark one but you can pick any color a drill to drill a hole through the cap to put the sempervivum in it. some glue to properly glue the sempervivum to the cap, in and outside (that helps to maintain waterproofness)   Inside the cap As you can see above the glue is not only keeping the sempervivum in place but also makes sure that the cap will still be waterproof. I see many petlings while geocaching that has a screw holding some objects on top of the cap, but that'...

GC Accessory: pill capsule log roller

Image
When it comes to creating geocaches it always comes to my mind what would I love to see out there. One of the biggest problem is rolling up the logs. Especially when they are old, being out and handled in not the best ways, etc. I saw many better solutions then just placing a rolled up paper in the pill capsule and then I cam to this solution with all combined. The pill capsule with the log roller. As you can see above the log is rolled up on a plastic roller and then has a piece of straw covering it and holding it together. Let me share with you how I made it. A 3D printer log roller, two parts. First thing is to find a template, or create one for the 3D printer and print it out. The one I used I found thanks to instagram, where weellu posted a picture of one and shared his blog post (which is in Finnish, but easy to read...) with the downloadable templates. You can find this in his blog on  the logroller . Feel free to download and share with the world, he dese...

Geocache: Selfmade bolt&nut

Image
I saw that you can order online different versions of the bolt&nut magnetic container, and I also found some of these geocaches earlier. They are fun, but as I cannot go out to search every day I also started to make geocaches, which later when I have a chance and a place I hide as well. So check it out. My bolt&nut container taken apart. It is nothing difficult if you have the tools, and materials needed. All you will need is: a bigger size nut, I used an M16 a matching bolt a strong magnet fitting into the nut some glue to keep the magnet in the nut a few drill bits to drill the hole some tool to get the sharp edges off a logroll, I'll cover how to make those in a separate blog later A picture while it is standing. The first step would be to drill a long enough hole in the bolt. To be honest it was done by my nephew as he has more of the power tools and he had the bolt and the nut... thanks a lot for him here. The reason I mentioned different si...
