Filling the matrix: 2018-03-14 & a frog

Image
This time I'm sharing another cool matrix you can try to fill, but before that let me show you one of the cool geocaches I came across just recently, while working on this matrix. The frog on the branch It is early spring here in the Netherlands and the trees and bushes are not covered with leaves, that was helping a lot. The hint for this hide was clear we need to find a frog on a tree, of course all it said was the latin name of the frog... Honestly it is hard to find time to go geocaching on busy days when those days are also short like in winter and early spring and this brings us to the next matrix I want to share. Finds by found date This matrix is showing you on which day of which month you found and how many geocaches you found; the year does not count. As you can see after a few years geocaching it is still kind of empty on the darker months starting from October till March. January and February was in a worse condition, then I decided to fill as many gaps as I...

Geocache: On the bridge

Image
If there is one object I had to name in the Netherlands that you can find all different shapes, sizes and colors that could be the bridge. As there is so much water all over, all different shapes; people have to travel across and for that you need bridges. The geocache hiding in its place On this sunny afternoon we decided to search for all geocaches on a small island on the river Maas. This was the firt one, you know those park and grab type geocache. The geocache As you san see the geocache is nothing fancy, no special features, a typical park and grab thing. But when we arrived to the location we already knew it was a good trip to get here. The view from the geocache Calm water on one side of the bridge, it was a bit windy day, but the river was still so calm and peaceful. The object holding the geocache While walking back to the car I made this picture. Could you guess just by seeing it, what is this for? I told you there all all different type, shape, size ...

Geocache: Bird house #4

Image
So far the coolest bird house, high up in the tree and a magnet is what you needed on the end of a stick, a long stick. The birdhouse with the magnet attached to the geocche As it might look simple it is if you have all the tools you need. The hint was clear you need a long enough stick with a magnet at the end. Of course we have one of those telescopic ones, but that is less than a meter long, so it is time to improvise. The geocache from below, hiding in the birdhouse We also have a magnet on a rope, where the rope is at least a few meters long, so that will do, but how do you get it up to the bird house? It is in the woods, and many broken branches are all around on the ground, so I just picked a longer one and attached my magnet with its rope to it and we had the tool we needed. A closer picture of the bird house As you can see it is a small bison capsule in the bottom of the bird house what needs to be pulled down. See the container? When we found this geoc...

Geocache: Return to the bush

Image
There are geocaches you just don't find when you first search for them. This one was one of those, and this one was far from home, a few thousands kilometers far, and I still went back and found it. The geocache is just there in the bush, and still missed the first time I do not have a chance to visit Olive Branch in Mississippi too often and when I go I try to find a few geocaches. On my last trip I decided to give another try to this one, it was not any high difficulty nor difficult terrain it was just one where I had to run away last time, police started to show interest in my search. I was not a too experienced geocacher, and I was all by myself so when I saw that police pulled over and kept an eye on me, I just acted the most suspiciously and jumped back into my car and drove away... Worst you should ever do ... haha The bush hiding the geocache It was a nice and sunny morning, nothing to do, my flight was later in the afternoon, and I was busy with finding ammo bo...

Geocache: Smiling tennis ball

Image
Sunny afternoon, usual busy day at work, let's get outside. It is not so hot as the previous days, so it's time to find a few geocaches which are just there, but not many in the area. A happy tennis ball. When it comes to more creative geocaches they allways give more pleasure, but they are mostly placed one by one and not on trails or series. The was next to a closeby lake, but on the other side we had to drive 15 minutes to get to the parking, and all we could find in that area was two, but both of them was a good hide. Let me eat that pill capsule. It can still be a micro container and have fun finding it. This hiding technic gets on the list of I want to create one of these myself. I'm not sure if it is fortunate or unfortunate but where we live there are so many geocaches in the area that it is close to impossible to hide more, so any ideas I duplicate will be far from where I find them. A picture from below while it is hiding. Under a small wooden br...

GC Accessory: pill capsule log roller

Image
When it comes to creating geocaches it always comes to my mind what would I love to see out there. One of the biggest problem is rolling up the logs. Especially when they are old, being out and handled in not the best ways, etc. I saw many better solutions then just placing a rolled up paper in the pill capsule and then I cam to this solution with all combined. The pill capsule with the log roller. As you can see above the log is rolled up on a plastic roller and then has a piece of straw covering it and holding it together. Let me share with you how I made it. A 3D printer log roller, two parts. First thing is to find a template, or create one for the 3D printer and print it out. The one I used I found thanks to instagram, where weellu posted a picture of one and shared his blog post (which is in Finnish, but easy to read...) with the downloadable templates. You can find this in his blog on  the logroller . Feel free to download and share with the world, he dese...

Geocache: Hiding in ivy

Image
Most ivy hides are evil. The reason is mostly as ivy grows fast and all over the place, and mostly covers a huge area. When I see in the hint the key work ivy I already start to worry, but at the end you will just be lucky if you keep on searching. When you found it it is easy to take a picture. On my first picture you can see the tiny little geocache on some ivy. Of course it was not there in open for everyone to easily spot. Hiding in the ivy. As you can see it was in the ivy, but with most ivy hides you would expect to be between the leaves, but not in this case. It was really smart to hide it between the roots of the ivy, first time I met with this technic. THe tree with the ivy hiding the geocache  This geocache was hidden in Bracknell (UK) on a road I did not see any sign of heavy traffic at all. Air was clean, thanks to all the huge trees the temperature was also comfortable for the hike to the geocache and on the way to the next one. The nice and big t...
