Geocache: Bolt & nut in the gate

Image
As the Mary Hyde challenges were still going on we kept on adding more smileys to the map in our neighborhood. This was one of them. The logbook in the bolt Recently I made one, but that can be hidden differently, check it out  here . This geocache was hiding in a gate close to some sporting facilities. These facilities are mostly crowded after work as many kids would be here, but for our luck it was summer holidays so it was closed, so we could make it the park and grab style. The geocache closed As we all know the coordinates are not always perfect, and that could cause some headache when you are looking for some tiny geocaches like this. The gate As you can see the gate is here to keep the sheeps in that area, however there was an electric fence to keep them in there as well. Check this gate out a bit closer. See the big spring? That is to pull the gate closed in case someone forgets to close it when leaving or entering the area, that is coll, but you could a...

Geocache: Nano in the picket

Image
We had a short trip to Belgium, down south part, close to Luxembourg and France. As part of the trip we did a few geocaches and collected two new souvernirs. The first geocache we found was not the easiest one, but after some search it was found. All the story in short It was not any heavy rain that day but it was not one of those great to be out there weather. The first problem we were facing with this geocache that the description was all in French, and to be honest our French is a bit rusty. Is that a problem nowadays on a top of some hills? Not really if you have any internet, which was super slow, so before we could translate the hint it took us a few minutes to search around the area. Well camouflaged hide As you can see above this geocache was really well done, hiding in that picket, and also it was not too easy to pull it out so for a split second I wasn't sure if I'm damaging something there or pulling a geocache out. The logroll still in the hole Aft...

Geocache: Noah's Ark and a minirail

Image
The last few weeks I tried to go for geocaches on days that help me fill in my calendar. In many cases I just picked one that is in reach within a short time. The weather is not always too supportive here in the Netherlands. This time we headed to an easy pick along the Maas river, and we had not much clue on what to expect, one thing was sure there should be some seats to take as the geocache was under the small table next to the seats. If there are seats there should be a nice view we thought. Not too complicated or creative but I guess not the container what was fun here As you can see what we found was a nano under the table, easy to find. Hiding under the small table So when we arrived we drove over some interesting things, did not really think anything of that at that time. Then we got out of the car and started walking towards the coordinates, when I spotted a giraffe. What is that doing here on top of that big... Wait a second... What is that big building looking ob...

Geocache: Nano under the bench #2

Image
It is common to hide nanos in busy areas, especially when there are not many places to put the geocache. This geocache is part of a serie which is placed to mark historical monuments in the town. Hiding under the bench The container is nothing new if you have came across some nanos before, but the place it is places makes it a bit harder to find. The bench itself is giving the way to hide, but as there are so many crossing metals here and there it is not a just look under and you found it type of hide. Just to make this photo above it took me some time as the sun was in such a position that it kept on getting in my way. The nano container This serie is well maintained as the nano just had a new logroll in it, and I was the second to sign. As the containers are so small the only problem with these is that the owner need to be ready any time to replace the logroll. I also have some nano hides, and when I'm checking on them and I find the log is half way full I replace it,...

Geocache: Muggle and a zombie

Image
How many times do you come across this situation? And how many times do you choose to explain the muggle why are you there? And how many time do you feel like you just have a new geocachers on board? The geocache hiding with a magnet. Sunny day, waiting for the connection flight at Detroit for nine hours, got out of the airport to go and find a geocache or more. Yes you are right as many as I could. I was on foot not many options and I walked till I could barely step more, this one was the last I picked up that day. And the most exciting one as well. The geocache out on top of its hiding place From the previous geocache I had to walk for over twenty minutes and I kept on thinking how many other good spots I see along the way and how much easier to hide here in the USA, so much more place, and then most geocaches are so far apart, so I understand why the so many park and grabs, this is also one of them. Next to a busy road towards the airport I arrived, and so a c...

Geocache: Light post hide

Image
Light posts, US, what's next? Under the skirt? That is what my first guess was, and I was wrong. After an hour in a taxi to the airport then going through all steps to get to the airplane, flying for over 8 hours and finally in Detroit? Going through the border control, then picking up the checked in bag, and quickly dropping it off. What to do? Ok, I was fully prepared this time, offline map, walking distance geocaches saved and updated yesterday evening. So let's try to find a transportation to a location where with some walk I can pick a few geocaches. The geocache on the light post To be honest, maybe it is also called skirt, or maybe I could just call it a mini skirt. It was a quick find, which gave me some happiness and the motivation to go for the next one, only 1.8kms away, if I could go straight, and of course I could not, so over 2 kms to get to that. A closer picture of the geocache on my tablet. I got a tablet from my wife, and I decided to use that when...

Geocache: Nano in the grass

Image
oh, uh, ah ... grass, and a green nano in between, already sounds a bit complicated to find, right? Not this time we found this within a minute, but the reason was only luck. That's all the geocache The first of these hides I found was also in an urban area somewhere in Hungary, that was on some electricity pole, and a lot easier to spot, but as the grass was recently cut around here it was an easy. We went out to find another one just to get a quick park and grab, but that was missing in action. The luck we with that first try is that it was next to a store which we did not think might be open, but was, so we could at least do some quick shopping before driving to this geocache. With the grass cut it is easy to find As we were on the way to park at the given parking place the rain started, not to bad, but still it was sprinkling. Then we reach a roundabout where we needed to turn right, guess what, the only exit closed, as we knew the neighborhood a bit we decided to t...

Geocache: In the bus stop

Image
Another piece of a series I placed in Hungary. This time hiding just where many muggles would wait for the bus, right there, they could spot, but nowadays most people do not look around, they just watch their phones mostly. Hiding in there... The bus stop is next to a busy road with double lanes both way, and there is the public transportation company building as well. When I took the pictures a bus also came by, and the driver even said hi to us. The view through the bus stop I had to wait a few minutes to make this picture as so heavy traffic was in the area. As you can see it was a great weather, perfect summer the forecast predicted rain, but that happened a lot earlier so it was really nice walking around. The full bus stop... how about when it is rainy and windy? I remember the days when I used to commute to work with public transportation, if I only knew about this game back then, I'm sure I could have picked many geocaches on the way to different places, b...

Geocache: On the sign

Image
Another popular hiding technic in many countries is to put a geocache on a traffic sign or other signs. See it hiding? There are usually a petling inside the pole of the sign, but in many cases that would place the container too high for shorter geocachers. This is one of my own hides and I know some of the local geocachers who needs help from their parents to find some of the geocaches placed higher so I decided to put some to easier reach height. The nano taken out Very important to make sure a container placed in its hiding should not be gone easy, this one has a tiny but really strong magnet glued to its side, that holds it so strong that if the last to find it pushed it too far in you might need a stick to push it out from the other end. Many geocachers do not like finding nano containers, but to be honest in urban areas most to hide feels better about them, I have many of the nanos in place in this area, and as I move out to the bicycle roads in the area I start...
