Filling the matrix: 2018-03-14 & a frog

Image
This time I'm sharing another cool matrix you can try to fill, but before that let me show you one of the cool geocaches I came across just recently, while working on this matrix. The frog on the branch It is early spring here in the Netherlands and the trees and bushes are not covered with leaves, that was helping a lot. The hint for this hide was clear we need to find a frog on a tree, of course all it said was the latin name of the frog... Honestly it is hard to find time to go geocaching on busy days when those days are also short like in winter and early spring and this brings us to the next matrix I want to share. Finds by found date This matrix is showing you on which day of which month you found and how many geocaches you found; the year does not count. As you can see after a few years geocaching it is still kind of empty on the darker months starting from October till March. January and February was in a worse condition, then I decided to fill as many gaps as I...

Geocache: Autobahn cache #4

Image
And the day came again... I was traveling through Germany and this time on a route I never took before. As it was not me driving I could not pick the stops but I was lucky enough that we stopped at a few places where I could search for a geocache. This was one of them. A magnetic film canister When I found it I was not sure why the magnet was needed, but I found some good use for it at least while I made this picture. On long trips along the autobahn and any other highways it is always good it you can stop to search for a geocache, that is a perfect reason to move a little bit, and in some cases it also make the stop more then jump out of the car turn left turn right stretch jump back and continue. On this trip as I was just a passanger and the driver was always in a rush and the only reason he was to stop was to smoke, that was limiting the search time to around 2 minutes and I had to pick go to the restroom, get a drink or find a geocache. It was not always the easiest pick a...

Geocache: At the ruins after sunset

Image
There is a place you grew up, and there are places there which you do not visit or at least not regularly. But what can be a better reason to stop at some of these places then a geocache? Now this ruin in Pécs is one of those places. The container with the view It was dark after a nice latte downtown with friends and coconut. As the hint was saying it is magnetic when we got to the place almost the whole team started searching at the most trivial place the fence which was steel. A better view with the container Of course it was not there, why would it be? As you can see the area was covered with some snow, just like the inside of the ruins. A nice view from the ruins It was so cold that by the time I found the geocache my hands were almost frozen, so signing the logbook was a small challenge. The view was so nice and thanks to the cold no muggles anywhere, geocaching in cold and snow also has its benefits. The walls of the ruins Unfortunately I did not have ...

Geocache: Along M3 - another highway hide

Image
If you travel the same route long enough to get bored with it, there is nothing better than changing the stops or adding some at least once in a while. I regularly need to drive from the airport at Budapest to Tiszaújváros and so far most of the geocaches along this route (M3) is represented as a smiley on my geocaching map. A magnetic PET preform This geocache is a bit off my regular route. So this is how it happened, while driving there is this huge intersection where you need to exit towards M0 and the airport. I was driving then there was this huge traffic jam where I was just driving with the speed I could have walked. Then I was so concentrated on the traffic jam that when it ended I forgot to take the exit, so I kept on driving towards the city center of Budapest. Yes, it is hiding there... Missing the exit is usually coming with some extra miles and time but as I was not in any hurry I did not really mind it, so I pulled down to the filling station. Then the lights ...

Geocache: At the viewpoint

Image
There are so many viewpoints along many of the roads we use in our areas. This one we drove by for the last nine or more years and never thought of stopping by ... till a geocache showed up and got us there. The geocache almost in its place As it is summer and the weather is not bad or some days it is even good in the Netherlands almost every day after work we try to go and find one or more geocaches in the neighborhood. Hiding amongst the stones On this evening we decided to go for this one and another close to a fast food restaurant. This was logged as a DNF by a few geocachers, but we like the challenges and as you can see we found it. Magnetic geocache I am still not sure what the magnet is for on this geocache's bottom as it was just put to its place as seen on the pictures and the magnet did not hold it at all. Maybe the last geocacher did not place it back as it was planned. The view from the viewpoint through its window That road you can see was the ...

Geocache: Reflecting red

Image
After the first year of acive geocaching you start learning about the typical hiding technics. This is one of them, but with a small twist. The geocache and its logbook The geocache itself is some reflective object that could be used on a bicycle, a pole, a postbox or anywhere to make sure passing by cars would spot the object and avoid hitting it. Now the twist with this one was the place the CO put it. It was under a bridge. Using two magnets it was stuck to the steel part of the bridge. Hiding under the bridge While we were searching for this geocache an elderly couple passed by, they were muggles for sure, had no clue what we were up to. So as I was expecting here and there the lady stopped and started to talk about how big shame on the townhall that these bridges are not well maintained. Then I looked a bit closer at the bridge and had to realize she is so right, this bridge had already four different colors painted on it and all visible at many spots as the paint was ...

Geocache: Noah's Ark and a minirail

Image
The last few weeks I tried to go for geocaches on days that help me fill in my calendar. In many cases I just picked one that is in reach within a short time. The weather is not always too supportive here in the Netherlands. This time we headed to an easy pick along the Maas river, and we had not much clue on what to expect, one thing was sure there should be some seats to take as the geocache was under the small table next to the seats. If there are seats there should be a nice view we thought. Not too complicated or creative but I guess not the container what was fun here As you can see what we found was a nano under the table, easy to find. Hiding under the small table So when we arrived we drove over some interesting things, did not really think anything of that at that time. Then we got out of the car and started walking towards the coordinates, when I spotted a giraffe. What is that doing here on top of that big... Wait a second... What is that big building looking ob...

Geocache: Nano under the bench #2

Image
It is common to hide nanos in busy areas, especially when there are not many places to put the geocache. This geocache is part of a serie which is placed to mark historical monuments in the town. Hiding under the bench The container is nothing new if you have came across some nanos before, but the place it is places makes it a bit harder to find. The bench itself is giving the way to hide, but as there are so many crossing metals here and there it is not a just look under and you found it type of hide. Just to make this photo above it took me some time as the sun was in such a position that it kept on getting in my way. The nano container This serie is well maintained as the nano just had a new logroll in it, and I was the second to sign. As the containers are so small the only problem with these is that the owner need to be ready any time to replace the logroll. I also have some nano hides, and when I'm checking on them and I find the log is half way full I replace it,...
