One of my favorite hiding technic is hide a geocache in a bird house. This one I found in Tennessee while on the way to Jackson. A beautiful bird house, but not for birds To build a bird house you can find many instructions on the internet, and yet every time I find one it is different from the previous ones. I'm sure it was shiny when it was made and put out there. All those painting on it, it is one that deserves a favorite point for the work put into making the hiding place. I'm not always sure how people give their FAVOs away, I've see many beautifully done geocaches with many finds and only a few FAVOs. If I meed any hides where it is trivial that it was not just buying a plastic container putting a logbook in and placing it out there and I have available FAVOs I always give one to respect the CO. Recently I just read some article online in a blog. It was about these hides so I thought it is time to share one more of these lamppost under the skirt hides from the US. This time from Mississippi state. Hiding place This I found on a sunny morning as part of my effort to turn put more smileys on the map around Memphis. Previous day there was a huge storm, with lots of water in a short time and many huge lightnings. I visited the Memphis area a few times already but never saw such a huge storm, and one other thing I've missed so far was the tornados. There are geocaches you just don't find when you first search for them. This one was one of those, and this one was far from home, a few thousands kilometers far, and I still went back and found it. The geocache is just there in the bush, and still missed the first time I do not have a chance to visit Olive Branch in Mississippi too often and when I go I try to find a few geocaches. On my last trip I decided to give another try to this one, it was not any high difficulty nor difficult terrain it was just one where I had to run away last time, police started to show interest in my search. I was not a too experienced geocacher, and I was all by myself so when I saw that police pulled over and kept an eye on me, I just acted the most suspiciously and jumped back into my car and drove away... I'm curious if I will reach on these typical hides a three digit number. Here is the next one, this time it was closer to some urban area, at a crossing with a stop sign. Hiding in the safety rail In the USA I mostly found pill boxes, some just had a magnet stick to it some camouflaged with the silver tape, just like this one. It must be out there for a longer time by now if you look at how much it is impacted by the weather and geocachers. You only start to realize how many safety rails are out there when you start searching for the geocaches hidden on them. Most of them should have an attribute stating not kids friendly. Safety rails are placed along the roads most of the time to protect cars from falling over into some dangerous area, and that already points out two issues that are not helping when you are geocaching with kids. The first is where you have safety rails you will have traffic, just read the logs on hides like that, they will all say too much traffic, etc. The second, there is a reason why the safety rails are there and mostly some danger, like deep ditch, water or a place you can fall into, and none of them is the best to have the kids close by. Isn't placing an ammo box at a cemetery a bit ironic? Ammo is designed to kill, so to me it is. My last day on a sunny morning in Mississippi and my goal was to find as many regular sized geocaches as I could, and most of them turned out to be ammo boxes. Not hiding to much, just there... I limited my map view on the geocaches that were to be easier and bigger in size, then I drove by those caches and if not many muggles were present I parked and started the search. Most of them were just like this one, park get out of the car and spot it, open, log, close, take pictures for the blog, and on the way to the next one. One thing is always fun, finding an ammo box anywhere. This one was on private territory of the cache owner, but easily accessible from the road. I just parked, on the side of the road, walked a bit, overcomplicated the search, got spiders all over me and even a tick got on me somehow. Ammo box in the pipe The fun in geocaching is that you can come across anything, today I was aiming for geocaches which were easy to find and bigger in size and preferably had some trackable items in them, or if none at least with many favorite points. This is how I ended up with this one. I also had over 10 favos to gave away, so I gave some today for good hides. A mushroom. Spending a few days in the USA, this time in the Memphis area, Tennessee and Mississippi. As in the states there are many hides under the light post skirts the only big difference usually is the way the container is prepared, the size, the shape. This time it was with the minions as the theme. Minions living under the skirt. To place a container under that skirt is no magic, but to make it more kids friendly you have to use some fun theme, kids just love minions. This container, when I found it was half way hanging out under the skirt, really could not miss, good that no muggles took it. I placed it back to where it should be, skirt in place like it should.
