Filling the matrix: 2018-04-16 and the police and the flood

Image
Did I get into trouble while geocaching? Yes and no. At least I met a really friendly agent or officer? How are the cops working for the sheriff called? Ok let's start with the flood. A dead end road This geocache I was after is located in Mississippi state in the United States, not far from Memphis. Work got me here and I had some extra hours to spend so what else to do then picking geocaches which are helping filling up some of the matrixes? I came well prepared for the trip, put together different trails to hunt down and I also had some simple ones to get the statistics going. I read the last logs of this geocache as well and they were mentioning road closure and that you can still walk to the geocache, so I said some walk won't hurt. When I arrived to the location I saw it will be a bit over a few steps, but come on I flew over the ocean to get to this geocache some walk won't stop me. Used to be a building? So I parked in front of the big signs and the ro...

Geocache: Bird house #5

Image
One of my favorite hiding technic is hide a geocache in a bird house. This one I found in Tennessee while on the way to Jackson. A beautiful bird house, but not for birds To build a bird house you can find many instructions on the internet, and yet every time I find one it is different from the previous ones. I'm sure it was shiny when it was made and put out there. All those painting on it, it is one that deserves a favorite point for the work put into making the hiding place. I'm not always sure how people give their FAVOs away, I've see many beautifully done geocaches with many finds and only a few FAVOs. If I meed any hides where it is trivial that it was not just buying a plastic container putting a logbook in and placing it out there and I have available FAVOs I always give one to respect the CO. Hiding in there This bird house was placed next to a resting area along one of the busy highways in Tennessee. I love resting area geocaches, they give you a reas...

Geocache: Another under the skirt hide

Image
Recently I just read some article online in a blog. It was about these hides so I thought it is time to share one more of these lamppost under the skirt hides from the US. This time from Mississippi state. Hiding place This I found on a sunny morning as part of my effort to turn put more smileys on the map around Memphis. Previous day there was a huge storm, with lots of water in a short time and many huge lightnings. I visited the Memphis area a few times already but never saw such a huge storm, and one other thing I've missed so far was the tornados. The geocache on the skirt It is really interesting that I see it with under the skirt hides that they are camouflaged. Why? If you camouflage a container you could also find some better hiding place like in a bush, on a tree? Back to the hiding technic, as I understood from the blog I read when we search for these geocaches we might be trespassing as these are mostly in parking lots of stores and that is their own pr...

Geocache: Return to the bush

Image
There are geocaches you just don't find when you first search for them. This one was one of those, and this one was far from home, a few thousands kilometers far, and I still went back and found it. The geocache is just there in the bush, and still missed the first time I do not have a chance to visit Olive Branch in Mississippi too often and when I go I try to find a few geocaches. On my last trip I decided to give another try to this one, it was not any high difficulty nor difficult terrain it was just one where I had to run away last time, police started to show interest in my search. I was not a too experienced geocacher, and I was all by myself so when I saw that police pulled over and kept an eye on me, I just acted the most suspiciously and jumped back into my car and drove away... Worst you should ever do ... haha The bush hiding the geocache It was a nice and sunny morning, nothing to do, my flight was later in the afternoon, and I was busy with finding ammo bo...

Geocache: Safety rail #2

Image
You only start to realize how many safety rails are out there when you start searching for the geocaches hidden on them. Most of them should have an attribute stating not kids friendly. Safety rails are placed along the roads most of the time to protect cars from falling over into some dangerous area, and that already points out two issues that are not helping when you are geocaching with kids. The first is where you have safety rails you will have traffic, just read the logs on hides like that, they will all say too much traffic, etc. The second, there is a reason why the safety rails are there and mostly some danger, like deep ditch, water or a place you can fall into, and none of them is the best to have the kids close by. Pill box with a magnet held on to a safety rail Lucky for the geocaching community most if not all safety rails can hold a magnet strong enough to keep the geocache in place for a long time. The only thing I would point out is that if you make such a hide be...

Geocache: Ammo box at the cemetery

Image
Isn't placing an ammo box at a cemetery a bit ironic? Ammo is designed to kill, so to me it is. My last day on a sunny morning in Mississippi and my goal was to find as many regular sized geocaches as I could, and most of them turned out to be ammo boxes. Not hiding to much, just there... I limited my map view on the geocaches that were to be easier and bigger in size, then I drove by those caches and if not many muggles were present I parked and started the search. Most of them were just like this one, park get out of the car and spot it, open, log, close, take pictures for the blog, and on the way to the next one. On other geocaching days when I would go for an area to get that cleaned I could collect a lot more geocaches on a single day, but on this morning I decided let's get to know the Memphis area better, this geocache was still in Southaven, Mississippi, which is another state. While driving around I even stopped at a coffee place other the Starbucks which I...

Geocache: Safety rail

Image
Another typical hiding location is the safety rails along the roads, streets, highways, parking-lots, etc. Mostly the container is held in place by magnet(s), just like this find. A magnetic container on the safety rail. Most of these are for the statistics, but I met one in Germany which was a really nice big container along the autobahn. This one I found in Detroit around the airport area, as I had nine hours between the two flights. The road with the safety rail. Let's talk about the safety rail for a minute. Did you think about why are they used? Who needs the safety? In most cases they protect cars from entering areas where it would be dangerous, in other cases they separate traffic going different direction to avoid cars trying to pass each others. Then there are some which is placed there to protect pedestrians from vehicles. What else? Any idea, add them in the comments. The container on my tablet. When I first started to make pictures of the geocaches I fo...

Geocache: Under the skirt and a smiling muggle

Image
This time in Tennessee at some dining place. I was just in a store across the parking lot when I finished I quickly checked and I saw there is one, not further than 50 meters from me. I had a long day and I was in the USA, so let me do it the American way. The container under the skirt I jumped back into the car and parked the car right in front of the light pole. Smiled at myself and immediately started thinking what excuse could I tell myself not to walk that few steps, but drive. And then the sun shined into my eyes and I had the excuse, I had to cover my search and the car was the cover, so I had to park it there. The container After finding my excuse I jumped out of the car with my gear (camera, pen) and started the search. Wow this sound like there was a huge search needed, so I lifted up the skirt, and there you go found this tiny capsule. This could get a bit higher difficulty as to get the log out of the capsule was not so easy turning the cap and then pulling the ...

Geocache: Ammo box, fire, tanks

Image
I looked this geocache up a lot before I went to Memphis. It is an ammo box hidden at a place which from above had already something to offer, so I could not go home without finding this. Ammo box in the fireplace  I arrived at the location with high hopes, and an easy find. At the end it was easy to find but gave me some headache. I'm personally not a big fan of front or backyard geocaches, especially in the USA, where people might have weapons, so trespassing is not a thing you really want to do. When checking out online the geocache I was hoping to have it somewhere on one of the tanks or other objects, but not at a fireplace. The fireplace with the geocache on the right bottom I was walking or rather wandering around the area, hoping that my GPS is not pointing at the right place, I was considering leaving when I looked at all the pictures available and one with a little kid in the place made me feel secure enough to go and search. When I found (to be honest it was ...

Geocache: You have mail ...

Image
This one was really one I gave a FAVO, it deserved it. A postbox to hide the geocache, what a brilliant idea, it is just out there for any muggle to see, however none really touches it. There's your mail or not? This is not one of those difficult to find geocaches, especially if you read the description or hint, but still it is just out in public and not getting muggled. According to the cache owner there was one earlier that disappeared often so the container had to be hidden. A picture from the side while the postbox is closed. At this point while sitting at the airport in Atlanta the alarm went off, not sure what is going on, but not too many people started running around so I decided to keep on writing this blog, and that I keep on listening to music. How do you like the pink stones in the parking lot? I personally not a big fan of pink, but my daughter when they were smaller they for sure loved anything pink. The whole parking lot belongs to a restaurant, which...
