Filling the matrix: 2018-03-14 & a frog

Image
This time I'm sharing another cool matrix you can try to fill, but before that let me show you one of the cool geocaches I came across just recently, while working on this matrix. The frog on the branch It is early spring here in the Netherlands and the trees and bushes are not covered with leaves, that was helping a lot. The hint for this hide was clear we need to find a frog on a tree, of course all it said was the latin name of the frog... Honestly it is hard to find time to go geocaching on busy days when those days are also short like in winter and early spring and this brings us to the next matrix I want to share. Finds by found date This matrix is showing you on which day of which month you found and how many geocaches you found; the year does not count. As you can see after a few years geocaching it is still kind of empty on the darker months starting from October till March. January and February was in a worse condition, then I decided to fill as many gaps as I...

Geocache: On the bridge

Image
If there is one object I had to name in the Netherlands that you can find all different shapes, sizes and colors that could be the bridge. As there is so much water all over, all different shapes; people have to travel across and for that you need bridges. The geocache hiding in its place On this sunny afternoon we decided to search for all geocaches on a small island on the river Maas. This was the firt one, you know those park and grab type geocache. The geocache As you san see the geocache is nothing fancy, no special features, a typical park and grab thing. But when we arrived to the location we already knew it was a good trip to get here. The view from the geocache Calm water on one side of the bridge, it was a bit windy day, but the river was still so calm and peaceful. The object holding the geocache While walking back to the car I made this picture. Could you guess just by seeing it, what is this for? I told you there all all different type, shape, size ...

Geocache: Under the bridge #2

Image
There are so many smaller and bigger bridges in the Netherlands that of every second would hide a geocache I'm sure it would keep most geocachers busy for a few years. We started to turn more points on the map into smileys in our neighborhood and as part of that project we got to this one. Hiding under the bridge It is really a good thing that we have difficulty and terrain as an attribute, without them I would not consider going for under the bridge hides in an afternoon, it would mostly start with some investigation to see how much effort, what equipment is needed to get under the given bridge. This one was a lower difficulty and no mentions of boots in the description, so we just went there with the whole family. My kids are not always into geocaching, more often not into it. To solve this issue icecream can always come in handy, so for this afternoon two geocaches and an icecream was the offer and they took it. Hiding there, but not too obvious This and another geoc...

Geocache: Under the bridge

Image
Not all under the bridge hides are difficulty and/or terrain five. Some are really a park and grab type, but some are nicer made than other, just like this one. The geocache It is no more than a typical petling, but hidden in a piece of wooden plank and that was hidden under the bridge. Really well done, muggle safe solution. Hiding under the bridge The only thing that quickly gave this hide away was the fact that so many geocachers found it in the recent period that they left a clear footpath behind. I'm not sure if this is a benefit or a disadvantage that this game is so popular in the Netherlands. On one hand, as it is popular, there are many geocachers reached the point that they start hiding as their close area is smiling all over. On the other hand most geocaches are found at least weekly but many each day multiple times, and that leads to easy finds at many locations. The bridge Nope, not all bridge needs to be big, and hard to find a geocache under it. T...

Geocache: Had to go back many times

Image
My wife and myself are not giving it up easily. This geocache was one of those had to go back and then again and once more, we had lots of headache thanks to this geocache. And yet is it any very special one? Oh yeah it is... read on. The geocache So let me start at the beginning, there are a few geocaches making a series of bridges in South Holland, the Netherlands. They are mostly placed on small or even tiny bridges, which we have so many in the area. The idea itself is already great and gives a reason to jump on your bicycle and go. The bridge If there is anyone on this planet who could rebuild this bridge blind that might be my wife and me. We checked each inch of it with all different tools, including eyes, cameras, endoscope, phones, hands, etc. Under the bridge I crawled under it into all places I could fit. I took pictures which we analyzed to make sure we did not miss any spots. Why? So we have a geocachers hiding in the area we live, who turned out to be l...
