Geocache: Nano in the grass

Image
oh, uh, ah ... grass, and a green nano in between, already sounds a bit complicated to find, right? Not this time we found this within a minute, but the reason was only luck. That's all the geocache The first of these hides I found was also in an urban area somewhere in Hungary, that was on some electricity pole, and a lot easier to spot, but as the grass was recently cut around here it was an easy. We went out to find another one just to get a quick park and grab, but that was missing in action. The luck we with that first try is that it was next to a store which we did not think might be open, but was, so we could at least do some quick shopping before driving to this geocache. With the grass cut it is easy to find As we were on the way to park at the given parking place the rain started, not to bad, but still it was sprinkling. Then we reach a roundabout where we needed to turn right, guess what, the only exit closed, as we knew the neighborhood a bit we decided to t...

Geocache: In the bus stop

Image
Another piece of a series I placed in Hungary. This time hiding just where many muggles would wait for the bus, right there, they could spot, but nowadays most people do not look around, they just watch their phones mostly. Hiding in there... The bus stop is next to a busy road with double lanes both way, and there is the public transportation company building as well. When I took the pictures a bus also came by, and the driver even said hi to us. The view through the bus stop I had to wait a few minutes to make this picture as so heavy traffic was in the area. As you can see it was a great weather, perfect summer the forecast predicted rain, but that happened a lot earlier so it was really nice walking around. The full bus stop... how about when it is rainy and windy? I remember the days when I used to commute to work with public transportation, if I only knew about this game back then, I'm sure I could have picked many geocaches on the way to different places, b...

Geocache: On the sign

Image
Another popular hiding technic in many countries is to put a geocache on a traffic sign or other signs. See it hiding? There are usually a petling inside the pole of the sign, but in many cases that would place the container too high for shorter geocachers. This is one of my own hides and I know some of the local geocachers who needs help from their parents to find some of the geocaches placed higher so I decided to put some to easier reach height. The nano taken out Very important to make sure a container placed in its hiding should not be gone easy, this one has a tiny but really strong magnet glued to its side, that holds it so strong that if the last to find it pushed it too far in you might need a stick to push it out from the other end. Many geocachers do not like finding nano containers, but to be honest in urban areas most to hide feels better about them, I have many of the nanos in place in this area, and as I move out to the bicycle roads in the area I start...

Geocache: Fake broken branch

Image
This is not the first and I hope not the last of this kind of geocaches I found out there. All you need is a good old tree with a hole where your container fits easy and won't hang out, a small piece of branch, preferrably same tree to match the colors and texture. Connect the two and plug it in, there you go. Pulled out a bit for better view. As you can see this hide was not that difficult as the cache owner did not use the same type of wood to camouflage the hide. We were going all around the tree for a few minutes before I spotted this one, and we were in three. For the size I added my small pen to the picture, so you see it is no bigger than a nano vial. I also like using the plastic vials but mostly in urban areas, as this tree was standing by itself on the field it does not take much to suspect the cache is on the tree, but just imagine it was in a forest with bad GPS signal... ok don't even imagine, that would be a sneaky, evil hide. This is how we found...

Geocache: under the bench at night

Image
This one was the first find on a trip to Taiwan. There are not too many geocaches in Taiwan and I was staying at a hotel outside the downtown area in Taipei. Last time the one I went from the hotel after arrival was about 2 km walk, one way. Since the last visit thanks to a geocacher this one showed up on the map within 1 km. So after a quick dinner we walked to the cache and found it. It was after sunset This library does not look any special from the outside, but I would be curious to see inside, most probably most books are in Chinese. I've been to bookstores here, but they sell new books and they look similar everywhere, but old ones they can be really interesting. Maybe one day I'll have a chance to visit during working hours. So this is how the library looks from outside: I could guess the time when it was built. In general in Taiwan there is a busy nightlife all around the year so any urban caches you can expect muggles all over the place. There was a smal...

Geocahe: hanging plastic nano

Image
As recently I'm planning to place more caches in a city, I was thinking on other ways to use my plastic vials, and I have a lots of them. Of course I need to plan for muggles, so each differnet hiding technics I'll make multiple ones of. Today's one is to hang in traffic signs, signs in parks, etc. Hanging plastic nanos If you want to create one, or need some of these, here are the more detailed instructions: Ingredients with an eastern egg. What you need is shown above: a nano plastic vial a logroll fitting into the vial a metal wire, strong enough to hold it and that can stick to a magnet (this is crucial in case someone drops the nano into the pipe it is hanging in) a piece of heat shrinking tube to hold it all together First you need pliers to make the tube big enough to easily pull on the tube with the wire. Use the pliers to make the tube big enough. The with another type of pliers I bend the wire to comfortably fit around the vial. ...

Geocahe: plastic vials

The fun in geocaching when you start hiding is that you not only start to see where a hide could fit, but what you could convert to a cahce. Unfortunate but true to most geocachers the safest is to hide a smaller container, that is where I started, and below are some ideas how to do it with vials used in centrifigures. Vials Just to summarize the ones you see on the image above. The top two are non twist cap and the easiest to get damaged and log would get wet. I stopped using these. The bottom two on the right are also none twist cap ones, I use them (not only as I ordered a bag of 100) they are easy to handle, and close tight after multiple use. The two on the left bottom are the latest I found online have twist cap, I use just started using them, mainly with magnets to better keep them in position. So here are a few ways of getting them a magnet: The vial and a magnet Magnet glued to the bottom of the fial, keep it in mind that this will stick to the object with the ...
