Geocache: At the unnamed lake

Image
On a sunny Sunday in Bracknell (UK) I had almost a full day to walk around and to find some geocaches. As I was on foot I decided to clear areas that has multiple in walking distance. This one was located at a lake that has no name, it is not some super big lake or any special, it is just in the middle of an industrial, office area. A magnetic cache. The hide was nothing really special, but something happened to it as it was in two pieces, one on the ground and one stuck to the pole with the magnet. As the contained had a plastic bag to hold the log, it was dry and in good condition. For those who just started playing this game it is a good advice to have repair materials with you all the time, some plastic bags of different sizes, some logbooks, some log rolls, some extra paper in case any of the previous does not fit when the log is full. As I was walking to the cache, I saw from a distance that there are muggles... the fishing type, actually they fish for fish, and most ofte...

Geocache: No dogs

Image
No dogs. A nice urban cache I came across in Bracknell (UK). It is placed in an industrial, office area where not many traditional geocaches are located. The container is a plastic bag behind the magnetic sign. Magnetic containers can come in any size from the nanos to bigger ones. I already met some of these before with High Voltage warnings or other danger signs, this was the first animal related one. Next to the entrance lower left corner. In business hours this cache could be harder, but for my luck I was there on Sunday. The more experience a geocacher collects the better (s)he can judge when to visit given geocaches; weekdays, weekends, working hours or after working hours, daytime or night time. It is really wise to plan your geocaching tour to given areas for given time of the day/week that can save you hours of waiting at a location to pick the cache. Two muggles far away. In this area I did not meet too many muggles, and they were in a hurry to get somew...

Geocache: Nano under the bench

Image
Another nano I found, this time in Bracknell, UK. This was the first cache I went after as this was the closest to the hotel I stayed. I was expecting some rain or sprinkling but lucky for me it was a great sunny day. Right after lunch for which I had a traditional breakfast, which happened that it was around half past eleven and they only served breakfast at that time. I looked up the location in the restaurant and it was in 200 meters, but to get there I had to walk almost a thousand as I had to go all around and under the roundabout. The nano under the bench It was an easy to find container, the only problem I had was a muggle sitting on top of it. What could I do? I took many photos, I tied my shoes, not as if it was lose or so, just to spend time. I almost gave up on it when he finally got it, and stood up and walked away pushing his bike. There were two benches Bracknell has many green areas, really nice big and old trees all around. As this was my first trip to ...

Geocache: Nano on the gate

Image
Sometimes you come across some nanos that just fun to find. This one was one of them. On a gate that actually did not close anything or did not seem to have any purpose. Can you spot the nano? It is silver. ... hiding in that small hole. Clever hide, no muggle would spot it for sure. Taken out. As this was part of a series in a new recreational area with a bonus cache at the end it had a bonus code on the container. The only way a muggle would spot this geocache would be if he tried to open the gate, but as it is just standing there in the middle of nothing why would anyone do try to open? The scenery from the cache As you can see on the above picture the area is so new that the grass did not even start growing. It would be nice to come back in a few months to see how much nicer it is, but I guess if we'll have another afternoon for geocaching we'll just go to some other place. See? in the middle of nothing, left behind? Sometimes when you see somethin...

Geocache: Gate to the village

Image
In Transylvania there is a typical gate used by the people. They have these type of gates at their homes, and villages that can afford also build one, and those have to be huge so that the big vehicles can also enter the village. The gate at Dálnok There is a geocache at the left side, it is a nano but not to hard to find. The fun in visiting this villages is that in Transylvania there are not too many geocaches but this village has four at some interesting places. See the nano? Next to the small stone. It was hard to make a good picture, it was the best I could do, but with some experience you cannot miss it. Maybe a fake bolt would have been a better choice, I'll let the cache owner think about it. See the view behind the gate, if you are lucky you can meet bears in this area. Most areas in Transylvania has a nice view, you could just sit around and enjoy. Watch the cows out on the fields eating the grass, or spot some wildlife. I have seen nice big bears mult...

Geocache: Train in a park

Image
A great dinner and some walk and geocaching, that is what keeps your jet lag far away... At least that is what I was hoping for, but the truth is that none of them helped me on this trip. To look at the brighter side I put many nice smiling faces on the map of Taiwan. The one below was in a park with a train in the middle. As this week on many of the days it was raining that evening as well, but I'm happy to report it is possible to find this geocache even in dark and rain. I think the rain helped some as no muggles were brave enough to hang out in the park in the rain. The train, cannot go far The hint is clear on this geocache, but you need to know a few movies, animation films to understand. One of them was trivial, but the other I had no clue, as the hint was referring to between the two poles, it limited the search area to two smaller part. The geocahce after I signed it. The cache hold in place by a magnet. After a few geocache finds I had the feeling...

Geocache: Duck in the water

Image
As an animal lover it is always fun to find a geocache that has anything to do with animals. This one was floating in the water just like many other ducks in the area. A duck just hanging out there. I saw the same ducks available in a discount store in Germany, and I also decided next time I stop by and they still have one I'll get one or two for myself as well. I hide in an area where there is a river so this would do a great hide there. I was thinking a lot where to put the container in a duck, and this is a great idea, just a hole on the top and the container plugged in there with some sealing. I have a slightly different idea on how I will do, but later on that. See the hole on the back of the duck, that is where the container was hiding. As this duck was part of a trail we really enjoyed the whole trail, no two same hiding way seen on the eight geocaches on the trail. I have to say I always respect the cache owners who put such effort into hiding a trail with all ...

Geocache: Fake broken branch

Image
This is not the first and I hope not the last of this kind of geocaches I found out there. All you need is a good old tree with a hole where your container fits easy and won't hang out, a small piece of branch, preferrably same tree to match the colors and texture. Connect the two and plug it in, there you go. Pulled out a bit for better view. As you can see this hide was not that difficult as the cache owner did not use the same type of wood to camouflage the hide. We were going all around the tree for a few minutes before I spotted this one, and we were in three. For the size I added my small pen to the picture, so you see it is no bigger than a nano vial. I also like using the plastic vials but mostly in urban areas, as this tree was standing by itself on the field it does not take much to suspect the cache is on the tree, but just imagine it was in a forest with bad GPS signal... ok don't even imagine, that would be a sneaky, evil hide. This is how we found...

Geocache: Carpool cache

Image
Every country has its different quick to find cache type. In the Netherlands it is mostly the carpool caches. If you are on the way to some place and you want to get a quick hit, or just need some fun for the day you need to pull off the highways and find a carpool, most of them has a cache.  The hide at a carpool in the bicycle storage. What makes the carpool caches easy is mostly the fact that outside the peak hours there is no muggle at the locations, only some cars and bicycles parking, so you can search relaxed. The only problem you might run into if a car is parking on top of the geocache which we had ones, but lucky enough for us it was me parking on the cache. This find was not the easiest at first look, we searched all around the coordinates, tried to avoid what some dog left behind. The hint in Dutch even for a native speaker was not pointing at anything at all. After a few minutes we decided no other way but touching everything looking into any holes, rainpipes...
